Health Tips: Keys to Raising Healthy Kids – Mind the Diet

November 18, 2011

As we stated in our previous article there are 4 basic tips, keys to raising kids, which will help your kids live a healthy life. Tip #2: Mind their Diet. Diet is the second component of a healthy life, the other being Fitness. Instil healthy eating habits early. Even your toddler should have as varied a diet as possible. If new foods are rejected, try and try again.

The bad news is by now old news: Childhood obesity rates are at an all-time high. Nearly 17% of kids age 2 to 19 are obese, meaning their body mass index is at or above the 95th percentile for children their age. That’s up 5% from 30 years ago! This is due to the bad diet followed by the last generations.

The good news: There are now many resources to help instil healthy eating habits. ‘’Good nutrition information is only a few clicks away’’, says Dr Jennifer Shu, a paediatrician with Children’s Medical Group in Atlanta. Shu points to USDA’s MyPlate, which replaced the clunky food pyramid. ‘’MyPlate is simple to understand’’ she says. ‘’Anybody can look at their own plate and ask, ‘’Is it really half-full fruits and vegetable?’’.

What about bargaining? ‘’You can have ice cream if you finish your veggies’’ does not work, Shu says. Parents’ most effective tools at mealtime are timing, patience and their own good habits.

No parent should have trouble following this tip and ensuring that their child is on the right diet, but should have trouble you should see a specialist. Basically you visit the specialist when your child’s weight is well below or well above average. Fitness and diet are essential for Health.
